Sintra Myths and Legends
Sintra Myths and Legends
Sintra Myths and Legends is the most recent tourist attraction of the Historical Centre.
The interactive centre of Myths and Legends invites you on a journey into the mysticism, secrets and romanticism of Sintra, through history, music and literature. You will be travelling along a path that takes you through seventeen different spaces, using set design, multimedia technology and sensory experiences, merging reality and fiction on various levels. This exhibition involved the participation of a team of architects, set designers, writers and historians as well as experts in audiovisual technology, holograms, sensory effects, augmented reality and 3D film.
The expedition through the myths and legends of Sintra begins inside an elevator lined with images of the town, to the sounds of the forest and with dimmed lights, but it’s on the 3rd floor that you reach the starting point of your visit, with the feeling of having arrived at the top of the Sintra Mountain.
Here, a narrator introduces the concept of the legends and speaks of the moment of the “Creation of the Penhas (Rocks) – Legend of the Five Peaks of Sintra with the same name and different surnames”. Then, on the 2nd floor, the visitor begins to make contact with other legends and historical events, through touch screens and the projection of an animated film using video mapping, supported by audio guide narrations.
On the 1st floor, you are introduced to the legends of the Tomb of the Two Brothers and of the Seven Sighs (Sete Ais). To recount these legends, life size holograms are created making the story spectacular. Also used are kinetic experiences where the visitors embody a character in a game, running through the woods, avoiding obstacles and picking up some of the elements associated to the legend. On the seventh “Ai” the player loses.
In a space dedicated to writers who have been seduced by the magic town of Sintra on display are animated pictures of these authors narrating their experiences. Here, in a 4D space, the legend of the apparition of Our Lady to the mute shepherdess with her flock of sheep in the mountain is explained by a multisensory experience complemented by scent and wind effects.
In the basement, new adventures await the visitors, such as: entering a tunnel that simulates the Initiation Well; the immersive experience of being aboard a ship seeing the Adamastor giant while enveloped by ocean waves; or even, using scenery and holograms, the recreation of the pagan universe, omnipresent in the legends and myths through nature, animals and fairies. The visit comes to an end surrounded by the magic of the green and the sounds of the forest.
